Placement & Proficiency Tests


The following placement and proficiency tests are administered by the Academic Dean’s Office, 222 DeRicci Hall, 663-2200.

English Placement* (1 hr./no cost) Determines the appropriate placement into one of the following:

  • ENG 99: Basic Writing Skills
  • ENG 110: College Writing
  • ENG 110H: College Writing Honors

This test requires that readings be mailed or picked up and prepared in advance. The readings are available through the Academic Dean’s Office.

Math Placement (untimed, most students take 1 hr./no cost) Determines the appropriate placement into one of the following:

  • MATH 98 Math Connections
  • MATH 101 Problem Solving or MATH 111 College Algebra
  • MATH 112 Algebra and Trigonometry or Math 122: Finite Math
  • RMATH 123 Mathematical Models in Business I , RMATH 124 Mathematical Models in Business II
  • MATH 231 Calculus I

Logic Proficiency (2 hrs) Enables students to “test out” of PHIL 101 Logic: The Practice of Critical Thinking. This test requires that readings be obtained and prepared in advance. The readings and informational guidelines can be mailed or picked up through the Academic Dean’s Office.

Math 111 Proficiency (1 hr 30 min) Enables students to “test out” of MATH 111: College Algebra. Informational guidelines can be mailed or picked up at the Academic Dean’s Office.

Speech Proficiency (untimed) Enables student to “test out” of COMMS 101 Speech. Informational guidelines can be mailed or picked up at the Academic Dean’s Office.

Students must register for proficiency exams in person with the Academic Dean’s Office in 222 DeRicci or by phone, 663-2200. Registering indicates a commitment; students need to cancel their registration if they are unable to sit for their exams.

  • Some proficiency exams require a $50.00 fee; students should call to see if the fee applies for the proficiency exam they wish to take. If the $50 exam fee applies for the proficiency tests, it should be paid before taking the test or on the day of the test.
  • Proficiency exams must be completed before the semester in which the student expects to graduate.

The above mentioned Placement & Proficiency tests (excludes English Proficiency) will be offered on the following dates. No walk-ins will be allowed.

English Proficiency Exam (2 hrs/cost up to $110; consult Academic Dean’s Office for specific details). The English Proficiency Exam may be taken to “test out of” ENG 110, 110H or RENG 151. This is a two part exam: 1) submissions of writing portfolios and 2) written exam. Students are required to submit their writing portfolios and have them reviews & examined before sitting for the exam. Portfolio submission is no later than 2 weeks prior to testing.

Exam registration and informational guidelines are obtained through from the Academic Dean’s Office, 222 DeRicci.

  • Students must submit 2 portfolios containing sample writings, have them reviewed and approved by department faculty prior to testing. Portfolio submission is done no later than 2 weeks prior to their test date.
  • Registering indicates a commitment to sit for the exam; students need to cancel their registration if they find they are unable to sit for their exams.
  • Proficiency exams must be completed before the semester in which the student expects to graduate.
