Placement & Proficiency Tests


The following placement and proficiency tests are available:

English Placement
English Proficiency

Speech Proficiency

English Placement*
This placement is untimed and takes most students approximately 1 hour. There is no cost The English placement determines the appropriate placement into one of the following:

  • ENG 99: Basic Writing Skills
  • ENG 110: College Writing
  • ENG 110H: College Writing Honors

This test requires that readings be mailed or picked up and prepared in advance. The readings are available through the Academic Dean’s Office, 222 DeRicci Hall, 663-2200.

English Proficiency Exam
The English Proficiency exam takes approximately 2 hours to complete and costs up to $110.00 This exam enables students to “test out of” ENG 110, 110H or RENG 151. This is a two part exam: 1) submissions of writing portfolios and 2) written exam. Students are required to submit their writing portfolios and have them reviewed & examined before sitting for the exam. Portfolio submission is no later than 2 weeks prior to testing.

Exam registration and informational guidelines are obtained through from the Academic Dean’s Office, 222 DeRicci.

  • Students must submit 2 portfolios containing sample writings, have them reviewed and approved by department faculty prior to testing. Portfolio submission is done no later than 2 weeks prior to their test date.
  • Registering indicates a commitment to sit for the exam; students need to cancel their registration if they find they are unable to sit for their exams.
  • Proficiency exams must be completed before the semester in which the student expects to graduate.

Foreign Language Placement
The Foreign Language Placement is untimed and there is no cost. Edgewood College offers the Foreign Language Placement for Spanish and French. The exam will help to determine the appropriate placement into one of the following:

  • Spanish/French 102
  • Spanish/French 201
  • Spanish/French 202
  • Spanish/French 312 or higher

Logic Proficiency
The exam takes approximately 2 hours. The logic proficiency enables students to “test out” of PHIL 101 Logic: Critical Thinking. This test requires that readings be obtained and prepared in advance. The readings and informational guidelines can be mailed or picked up through the Academic Dean’s Office, 222 DeRicci Hall, 663-2200.

Students must register for proficiency exams in person with the Academic Dean’s Office in 222 DeRicci or by phone, 663-2200. Registering indicates a commitment; students need to cancel their registration if they are unable to sit for their exams.

  • Some proficiency exams require a $50.00 fee; students should call to see if the fee applies for the proficiency exam they wish to take. If the $50 exam fee applies for the proficiency tests, it should be paid before taking the test or on the day of the test.
  • Proficiency exams must be completed before the semester in which the student expects to graduate.

  • MATH 231 Calculus I

Math 101 Proficiency
The Math 101 Proficiency Exam is administered by the Department of Mathematics. Students interested in satisfying the requirement by exam should contact the Chair of the Department.

Math 111 Proficiency
The Math 111 Proficiency takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. This exam enables students to “test out” of MATH 111: College Algebra. Informational guidelines can be mailed or picked up at the Academic Dean’s Office, 222 DeRicci Hall, 663-2200.
