Controlled Burns

Starting April 7, 2026, the Landscape and Grounds Department will begin controlled burns in select prairie and rain garden areas on campus. These burns will take place when weather and site conditions are appropriate.

Because conditions vary daily, it is not possible to provide an exact date or time for each burn. Controlled burns may occur as early as April 7 and may take place over multiple days.

The University has obtained the required Natural Lawn Burn Permit from the City of Madison Fire Department, which is valid through June 15, 2026.

Controlled burns may occur in the following areas:

  • Marshall Hall gardens
  • Dominican Hall gardens
  • Siena Apartments gardens
  • Edgedome gardens
  • Bird mound (between DeRicci and the Stream)

Burns will not occur simultaneously. Each garden area will be burned individually, and the fire will be fully extinguished before work begins at the next location. A minimum of two experienced staff members will be present during all burns.

Individuals are encouraged to coordinate with their supervisor if flexibility to work from home or adjust schedules is needed during burn activities.
