October 26th Words Matter! Proper Pronouns, Names, Avoiding & Dead Naming:
Keeping Up with Gen Z and our LGBTQ+ Community
Tuesday, October 26th WebEX 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
October is LGBTQ+ History Month. A fantastic way to honor Queer History is to improve the future! This professional development workshop will focus on why our words & intentions are so important, especially pertaining to LGBTQ+ students, staff and faculty here at Edgewood.
Fr. James Martin in his essay, How Can Catholic Colleges Welcome the LGBT Person, said
“Never forget how much L.G.B.T. people have suffered… According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, lesbian, gay and bisexual youth contemplate suicide at almost three times the rate as straight youth; and they are almost five times as likely to have attempted suicide. Forty percent of transgender adults have considered suicide; and of those, 92 percent did so before they were 25.”
Presenters will be Edgewood community members Rae Senarighi and Jeanne [J.] Benink. Both presenters have given LGBTQ+ focused presentations in a variety of settings and have a broad breadth of experiences and knowledge to draw from. They will be joined by EC students who are part of the Leadership Team of the EC Queer Student Organization (SAFE).
