How the Writing Center can help your class...

With students returning to class next week, here are important ways to help you and your students make the most out of the Writing Center this semester...

  • Invite us to meet with your class:
    • We can talk to them for 10 minutes on how to use the Writing Center, up to 30 minutes on specific strategies related to the assignment.
    • We can include information about citation styles, approaches to the assignment, plagiarism, or commonly seen issues in writing.
  • We recommend offering extra credit for using the Writing Center, rather than making it a requirement for students to come in:
    • Requiring often results in students coming at the last minute for a stamp, not substantially revisiting/revising their work, or having time to engage with a tutor in the writing process.
  • Let us know at least two weeks in advance if you will be encouraging your students to come in:
    • Send us a prompt or the assignment (include what you are looking for/what you want students to focus on).
  • Have your students submit “before and after” visiting the Writing Center drafts, so they realize the importance of making changes and engaging in the process.

The Writing Center is here for you this semester!  Email Doug Wandersee or writingcenter@edgewood.edu to find out more.
