Recent Space Enhancements

Dear Students,

I’d like to take a few moments to update you on 1% list items that have been completed and are also in the works for summer improvements.  As a reminder, the 1% list is a result of the Credo Space Study and refers to projects and improvements that can be completed at a cost that may fit within a department operating budget.

A large group of faculty, staff and students worked on a design to update and improve the functionality of the Nona McGreal room.  New carpet and furniture was installed in early January.  We have received favorable feedback regarding the many options for setting up the room.   The classroom style chairs were not exactly what we had expected, so we will be ordering new chairs for the Nona.

The Gathering Space and Front Door to Campus Subcommittees have worked on a design to freshen the space at the Predolin Lobby and top of the Predolin stairs.  This is the wall space directly across from the OSII desk.  The wall has been painted and we are working on new furniture that will improve the functionality of the space and offer a new space for students to check their laptops or meet their friends.  Two tables have been ordered and will likely add an area of soft seating.  It is a high traffic area and will become a highlight on student tours.  Renderings for the Predolin Lobby area are being prepared based on feedback from the two subcommittees.

The Classrooms subcommittee prepared and conducted a survey after fall semester.  A substantial amount of information was collected.  Based on feedback from the survey, we are planning to receive some demos for new furniture options for flexibility in the classroom, including technology/teaching stations.  We are planning to have the demo furniture available in Fall Semester for faculty feedback.

The Front Door to Campus and Wayfinding Subcommittees have partnered to work on a campus wide Wayfinding Study.  Innerface Architectural Signage has completed their initial on-campus work at Monroe Street and Deming Way.  The initial study has been reviewed by the subcommittees and we have prioritized areas that will have a large impact on the guest experience on campus.  These include signage on the parking ramp, improved visibility of the Campus Assistance Center, full campus map kiosks and directional signage to key areas of concern.

The Access to Lake Wingra Subcommittee has identified some things we can do to improve access to the boardwalk.  We will be adding a handrail to the stairs and improving the grade of some areas.  Sarah Kreger, Landscape and Grounds Manager, hosted volunteer events that were educational, and also helped to maintain the beautiful woodland area.  The group will also prepare a list of components that should be considered for a larger scale lake front restoration project. As a reminder, please enjoy the new furniture on the Mazzuchelli roof seating area!

Thank you to all who participate in this work.  It would not be possible without your partnership!

Thank you,
