Non-Attendance Notification- Faculty Action Required
Due to increased federal oversight as it relates to financial aid, non-attendance tracking is required in all courses. Instructors will need to report students who did NOT attend during the first week of classes by 11:59 pm January 24.
- Please wait until your last course meeting before 1/24/23 to actually report your non-attending students. If faculty report non-attendance immediately after the first meeting, sometimes the student ends up attending the second meeting that is still before the deadline.
How do I report a non-attending student?
- Login to J1Web
- Go to ‘bookmarks’ at the top of the page, then select “Submit Early Alert”
- Log into the Edgewood Express page
- Item #1, ‘Submit Early Alerts for’, click on the dropdown and select the course in question
- Click on the name of the appropriate student(s)
- Click ‘OK’
- Item #2, ‘Your relationship to the selected student(s)’, click on the dropdown and select ‘Faculty’
- Item #3, ‘Type of Concern’, click on the dropdown and select ‘NO ATTENDANCE’
- Item #4, ‘Severity of this issue’, click on the dropdown and select ‘High’
- Item #5, No further explanation is needed
- Item #6 ‘Have you interacted with the student?’ Select ‘No’
- Click ‘Submit Early Alert’
Students need to participate in at least one of these academically related activities within the first week of class:
- Physically attending a class where there is an opportunity for direct interaction between the instructor and students;
- Submitting an academic assignment;
- Taking an exam, an interactive tutorial, or computer-assisted instruction;
- Attending a study group assigned by the school;
- Participating in an online discussion about academic matters; and
- Initiating contact with a faculty member to ask a question about the academic subject studied in the course.
The definition of academic attendance and academically-related activity does not include activities where a student may be present, but not academically engaged, such as:
- Living in institutional housing;
- Participating in the school’s meal plan;
- Participating in a student-organized study group;
- Logging into an online class without active participation; or
- Participating in academic counseling or advising.
For students who are identified as having not attended, we will communicate with the students directly and review their financial aid award manually immediately after fall aid is disbursed. This is a good “stop” because it helps us prevent students from borrowing money they may not need this semester. If they start attending classes, their aid will be disbursed as normal.
