When we talk about Universal Design for Learning (UDL), we often think about using technology in our teaching, but this isn’t the only way to think about Universal Design.

UDL is a way to design your classes for students with a wide variety of learning styles and needs. It is based providing multiple means of (1) engagement; (2) representation; and (3) action and expression.

The idea behind UDL is to use these principles to remove barriers for learning, while still holding students responsible for learning outcomes in your class. Designing your courses with these principles means reflecting on the learning outcomes, thinking about the multiple means students could use for engaging with these concepts, and determining if there are multiple ways students can demonstrate that they understand the concepts.

As a continuation of the discussions at August Seminar and the Inclusive Classroom session, we will use our time together to begin to build out a teaching tool kit for engaging and assessing a wide range of students in the classroom.

Using the major principles from UDL we will explore examples and case studies, apply these principles to our own teaching, and share resources that can be used for finding examples of using UDL for teaching in multiple disciplines and professionalprograms.

Bring questions and/or examples of how you use UDL in your classroom. This session will include some lecture, video, small group work, and discussion. As much as possible, the principles of UDL will be modeled throughout the session.
